Object Study: The Valentino Garavani Embroidered Panthea Bag

By Jannah S.

Unique and captivating, this embroidered version of Valentino's Panthea Bag is the bag to experiment with this season. In this Object Study essay, we take apart the different components of this bag to find out the motives behind Alessandro Michele's design choices.

The Encounter

A flash of pink appeared and disappeared on my screen as I doom-scrolled on Instagram. And, like an ant to sugar, I scrolled back up to check out what had caught my eye. Lo and behold, my newest obsession. It was Valentino Garavani’s Panthea Bag, but not one of the leather ones I had seen before. My curiosity piqued but I couldn’t figure out why I felt a pull towards it. With the needlepoint floral motif on the front and the studded leather straps, the aesthetics weren’t matching up. And yet, I was already head over heels for this bag.

2

The Observation

It didn’t take me long to find myself on Net-a-Porter.com and valentino.com, looking for a closer view. As with all objects that have visually arrested me, I zoomed in on the images on my MacBook, scanning slowly for details Instagram had reduced to a blur.

Grand Illusion

The first detail that captured me was the beaded pink border tracing the edges of the bag. The outer side of the bag is made of black linen and organza, while the inside is lined with black nappa leather. Moving centre stage is the extravagant floral needlepoint in pink, green, ivory, violet and deep gold, with select parts embellished with multi-coloured microbeads. Upon closer inspection, the violet, ivory and deep gold on the bag formed ribbon-like banners, the sort one might find strung along a grand staircase at a gala, while the flowers occupied the central landing. The illusion becomes more convincing in the details: deep-gold microbeads run vertically along the hem of the ribbons like ruffled tassels, lifting parts of it from the otherwise flat needlepoint.

Devil’s in the Detail

The Valentino ‘V’ logo sits at the top centre in gold hardware, interrupting the visual continuity of the threaded fabric yet anchoring the flowers as the bag’s focal point. Gold then continues into the chain handles. And as if there weren’t already enough embellishments, obnoxious-looking black enamel feline heads laden with Swarovski crystals are attached to the front handle loops, one on either side. The black leather shoulder strap with its silver studs is harder to reconcile against the embroidered florals, almost as if the wrong strap was attached.

Reality Check

As for its size, it is spacious enough to accommodate the realities of daily life: a phone, wallet, a small cosmetic pouch, sanitary pad, a small journal and pen, and what-have-yous. Inside, it features a zippered pocket for God knows what fits in there, and a little slip pocket sewn in front of it. A double zip with gold hardware and leather tabs closes the bag.

3

The Decode

To a regular person (like my brother to whom I had shown this bag out of excitement), this bag was overkill, too loud, too much going on. And yet it was precisely because of its excessive, maximalist design that I was attracted to. Seemingly built from oppositions—leather versus embroidery, studs versus florals, feral versus feminine—the beauty of this bag emerges not despite its contradictions, but through them.

Order Versus Chaos

The bag’s basic architecture is surprisingly disciplined. It is essentially a horizontally elongated bag with a soft, conventional symmetrical structure. Strip away the ornament and the silhouette is familiar, the sort that wouldn’t look out of place among the season’s more conventional shoulder bags. The regularity of its shape connects to its practicality. Essentially, it is a typical modern-day medium-sized shoulder bag constructed with linen and leather and completed with a double-zip closure for easy access in the name of IRL usage.

Then, the order and conventionality are attacked and destabilised by the explosion of colours, textures and embellishments across the front and back. But what’s even more surprising than the struggle between order and chaos is that order somehow provides a stage for chaos to take place. Order keeps itself invisible in a conventional silhouette and a black linen backdrop while chaos reigns free in pink, violet, deep-gold and multi-coloured microbeads.

Ferocity Versus Femininity

On first look, one might see two categorically opposing aesthetic themes: on one hand you have the femininity of the florals, the beaded embellishments and the pink borders, and on the other you have the ferocity of the crystal-spotted feline heads, the black leather and the metal studs. Even to the inexperienced eye, it is easy to distinguish the feminine from the feral. In this Panthea Bag, the disunity between them is put front and centre, highlighting the tension and the drama in its design.

On second look, though, the tension between the two categories begins to transform. One starts to realise that, together, the two evoke a sense of subverted femininity where visions of daring and beauty are projected at the same time. The black cat motif of the bejewelled feline heads seems to embody this particularly well: domesticated yet predatory, sensual with a touch of danger. Frida Kahlo unexpectedly came to mind: her extravagant floral headdresses, signature Tehuana dress and layers of jewellery, feminine and formidable all at once. A woman like her would be the woman to whom this bag belongs.

Danger Versus Romance

Themes of danger and romance also emerge from this bag. While ferocity and femininity have a push-pull relationship on the visual plane, this pairing has that same relationship on the emotional plane. This then begs the question: what if this Panthea bag was made without one or the other? Remove the studded leather strap and the feline heads, the bag risks becoming saccharine. Or, take away the florals and embellishments, the bag turns colder. Put together, each changes the emotional temperature of the other. In gothic literature, we see it in Dracula and his undead brides. In pop culture, we see it in the “He was a punk, she did ballet” pairing. Perhaps, the thing that makes this concept work is the ever-intertwining thrill of danger and romance.

The Beauty of the Unresolved

With the feral/dangerous and the feminine/romantic in an intense visual faceoff, the bag itself resists resolution. Its elements shift the gaze between floral embroidery and studded leather, romance and aggression. Perhaps, this is where the beauty of this bag lies, not in forcing the contradictions into perfect balance, but in never fully resolving it.

The Context

The Collection, Interferenze

The embroidered Panthea bag was presented on the runway at Palazzo Barberini in Rome for Valentino’s Fall 2026-27 ready-to-wear collection. The collection was titled Interferenze, a name befitting the collection this Panthea bag was from. Alessandro Michele himself said that he was the “interference” within Valentino’s established aesthetic architecture in an interview with Luke Leitch for Vogue. With that, the construction of the entire collection revolved around the idea of interference in which he sought to generate visual tension—seen in the rivalry between feral and feminine—and emotional tension—experienced in the pairing of danger and romance.

Palazzo Barberini

So apt is Palazzo Barberini as the venue for this collection because of how the tension in its architecture mirrors the tension explored in the collection: the palazzo’s ordered architectural structure disrupted by the theatrical movement of its Baroque interior mirrors the conventional silhouette of the Panthea bag that is destabilised by the excessive ornamentation. Additionally, the conflicting architectural styles between Borromini’s spiral staircase and Bernini’s angular one mirrors the conflicting aesthetics of floral embroidery and studded leather of the Panthea bag. In Michele’s words, “divergent forces cohabit without neutralizing one another.”

On closer look, even more uncanny is how similar the grand effect of these tensions are. Despite their conflicting styles, the Bernini and the Borromino staircases of the palazzo, and the floral embroidery and the studded leather of the Panthea bag, do not cancel each other out; instead, each modifies how the other is perceived. Michele writes, “Sense is not generated by the triumph of one polarity over another, but by their holding together: an unstable equilibrium that makes form a continuously operative field of forces, an open system of interferences.” While beauty is often expected to require visual harmony, Michele challenges this notion by combining at-first opposing styles on the same bag. It is then in this tension and lack of reconciliation where the unique beauty of this bag emerges.

Alessandro Michele’s Signature Style

The designer’s inclination to drama in his work is the driving force behind Interferenze. His work in this collection showcases elements of decorative excess and daring colour and textile usage. The florals on the Panthea bag recall romantic floral prints in Pier Paolo Piccioli-era designs, however, Michele places it in a more aggressive setting through the studded leather straps and feline heads. While Valentino has been recognised for its red-carpet-ready and highly feminine looks on the runway, the kinds that were fit for Roman goddesses and movie stars, Michele introduces his theatrical twists, tickling and just interfering with the house’s established codes rather than overpowering them.

The Wardrobe

If the beauty of the Panthea bag lies in its unresolved contradictions and its apparent theatrical features, then perhaps playing these up is the way to style it. Sometimes, that means allowing the bag to take centre stage and styling the rest of the outfit minimally. And other times, it means matching its drama with a little of one’s own.

Pared-back

Start off with clean silhouettes and uncomplicated wardrobe essentials such as A-line skirts or dresses, straight-cut trousers, crisp poplin shirts, and structured jackets or cardigans. Add a pair of sleek ballet flats or loafers, or even a pair of basic strappy heeled sandals. With an outfit as pared-back as this, even an extravagant bag like the Panthea is surprisingly wearable for everyday wardrobe.

Gothic Twist

Taking it a notch darker, channel your inner romantic goth. Play up the bag’s black linen and extend the black shade throughout your outfit in the style of a modern-day vampiress (think: Drac’s girl in the 21st century). Go with a romantic high-neck lace top and full skirt, repeating the Panthea bag’s romanticism. Finally, choose a pair of lace-up heeled boots to bring out its darker character.

Rock and Roll

If you have a thing for rock and roll, go for an oversized leather jacket with belt-and-buckle features, knee-high or even thigh-high boots paired with black or white stockings and a distressed denim skirt, echoing the Panthea bag’s studded leather strap and amplifying its aggressive detail.

Ballet Chic

Otherwise, let the feminine and romantic features of the bag guide your dressing, perhaps taking it into balletcore territory. Start off with baby pink dresses like Cecilie Bahnsen’s Floria cloque midi dress whose skirt recalls a ballerina’s tutu. Like the Panthea bag, introduce a rebellious edge to the outfit with a Gucci leather jacket and a pair of Dolce&Gabbana’s 90 leather knee-high boots to echo the bag’s leather strap while also keeping the outfit from looking too sweet. Complete the look with classic black tights like Wolford’s black ribbed-knit tights.

The Desire

The embroidered Panthea bag doesn’t promise to make dressing easier. But, that’s exactly where its attraction lies: not only does the bag capture the gaze of the onlooker, it also nudges a sense of confusion, curiosity and contradiction from them. And what more if that onlooker becomes the wearer? I suspect that to carry such a bag would be to invite some of that attention onto oneself. The wearer then will have to be willing to receive that attention, ultimately challenging them: “Do you have what it takes to wear me?” Perhaps, it is not that the bag makes a woman more daring. Perhaps, the bag reveals the daring that she already possesses.

How to Dress Sophisticated & Grunge-y This Fall

How to Dress Sophisticated & Grunge-y This Fall Rediscovering the Joy of Locally Sourced Food

Fall has always been my favourite season (though I live in Singapore where it’s tropical all year round, with a decent amount of rain). That’s only because I get to layer up and really experiment with my clothes. On that end, I’m also a lover of heavy, weighty fabrics. So, the cooler days of the year (that is, rain season in Singapore) are days where I get extra excited to wear out heavy clothing.
